Alberta sets rules on online cannabis buying ahead of legalization

EDMONTON — The Alberta government has released new details surrounding the online sale of cannabis in the province.

Albertacannabis.org will soon be the only legal recreational cannabis store authorized to sell online in the province. In fact, Albertans will be able to purchase cannabis and have it delivered to their door via Canada Post or Purolator.

However, Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) officials say they are committed to keeping cannabis out of the hands of minors and reducing illicit market purchases.

As a result, Albertans over the age of 18 will be able to access albertacannabis.org using a one-time age verification process described as being fast and secure. Age verification will also be required at time of delivery for all online orders.

Officials add that users will be prompted to set up an account when they visit albertacannabis.org and must verify they are age of majority. To ensure consumer privacy however, AGLC officials say no consumer data will be stored from credit file verification or identification verification information collected during the account set up process.

AGLC is now said to be working with licensed producers and retailers to provide Albertans with access to clean, safe, regulated cannabis products at competitive prices. In fact, relationships have been established with 15 licensed producers, including three from Alberta to provide dried flower, oils, seeds, capsules and pre-rolls with plans to engage additional producers as they become federally licensed to offer even more choices to Albertans.

Officials say Albertacannabis.org incorporates industry best practices aimed at better educating new cannabis customers and providing more detailed information regarding product properties including THC and CBD levels, as well as product terpene (smell) profiles.

Albertacannabis.org will go live October 17, 2018.
