MORLEY, AB — RCMP have laid 14 charges against a 16-year-old male in connection with the shooting of a German tourist on a highway near Morley earlier this month.

During a news conference Tuesday morning, RCMP confirmed the youth, a member of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, was taken into custody on August 24th in connection with the incident. He has been charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a prohibited weapon, among other charges. The youth cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The tourist, 60, was shot in the head while driving on Highway 1A with his family on August 2nd.

He has since returned to Germany for specialized treatment.

RCMP say they’ve located and seized the vehicle and firearm believed to be involved in the shooting. The bullet has been removed by German doctors and will be compared forensically to the seized weapon.

RCMP add the investigation is still ongoing, but no additional suspects are being sought.

The youth remains in custody and is scheduled to make his first court appearance today in Cochrane Provincial Court.
