MEDICINE HAT, AB — Work may look like it has slowed down at the Aurora Sun facility in the city, but the developer said crews are plowing ahead.

Dawson Wallace Construction said the grading has been completed and the next phase will be laying the foundation.

The construction tender is out and closes at the end of the week.

After the foundation is down, the structure itself will start going up.

Mayor Ted Clugston said he tries to drive by the site once a week and adds he knows the excitement is only continuing to build and will only grow more, once pieces begin moving again.

“It went very, very quickly once they announced, they started clearing dirt and six, seven, eight earth movers there, going all the time,” he said. “And so if you drive by right now, there’s only a few workers on site and I think that’s just, from what I’m hearing from planning, everything going ahead as scheduled.”

Clugston said he gets asked daily about the facility and can feel the anticipation in the community once again with industries who can see the benefit to more people living to Medicine Hat.

“When you’re in car sales, you’re looking for people with jobs and new jobs and new people moving to the city and so there’s that optimism there that people will be able to afford a car,” he said. “And it’s not just cars, it’s the real estate agents hoping that people can buy a starter home or that people move up from their starter home to a nicer, family home.”
