MEDICINE HAT, AB — Nearly one year after Cenovus sold its assets in southern Alberta, companies are continuing to extract oil and gas from the former properties.

In October 2017, Torxen Energy and Schlumberger announced a partnership to purchase the Palliser block of oil assets from Cenovus for $1.3 billion. The sale officially closed in December.

Brad McFadden, general counsel with Torxen, says the company has primarily been working in areas near Brooks and Drumheller, where the assets are located, and says there are approximately 175 workers in the field.

“We’ve had a pretty consistent development program,” he said over the phone from Calgary on Wednesday. “We’re running four rigs, drilling primarily horizontal oil wells, and so we’ve been pretty consistent in our development plan since we’ve acquired it, and look to keep that activity up going forward.”

Last September, Cenovus also sold its assets in Suffield and Alderson to International Petroleum Corp for $512 million. The deal officially closed in January.

According to International Petroleum’s website, no gas wells has been drilled since 2010 and no oil wells have been drilled since 2014.
