Medicine Hat Jobs hosts career fair

MEDICINE HAT, AB — There’s been an increase in the number of people out of work in Medicine Hat.

The unemployment rate last month was 4.8 per cent, but it was only 3.6 per cent one year ago.

Those looking for work had the opportunity to attend a local job fair hosted by Medicine Hat Jobs.

Job seekers had a chance to meet face to face with potential employers.

Alison Pfeifer, career and employment consultant, says those interactions make a difference when applying for a job.

“What I like about this is it allows for an opportunity for someone to get past their resume,” said Pfeifer. “Put a face to their name, and really come in and speak with an employer directly.”

Nicholas Orich recently became unemployed and he was excited at the opportunity to meet with employers.

“This is a much better experience,” said Orich. “You actually feel more inclusive in the job hunt process.”

Job hunting can be daunting at times, but there were a variety of businesses in attendance to help people find the right fit.

Kathy Wyrostok, director of human resources with Davis Auto Group, says her company is looking to fill variety of positions.

“We’re trying to match the skills that they possess with the positions we have available,” said Wyrostok. “But it’s always nice when you get people who are you know able to just come with a good solid handshake and start a conversation.”

Making those impressions isn’t just about having a good conversation and Wyrostok says you should dress for the part too.

“When we see people come in like they’re not dressed appropriately for an event like this and making that first good impression. That’s probably one of the bigger mistakes that I think,” said Wyrostok. “You have one opportunity to make that first good impression, so you need to make a good one.”

If you’re checking the boxes but still having a tough time finding work, Medicine Hat Jobs has lots of free resources available for you.

Their office is open from Monday to Friday and Pfefier says they’ll help any way they can.

“Do things like review their resume, help them find work opportunities. People are welcome to come in and use our services at our offices. To look at our job board, use the computers, fax, photocopy, whatever needs to be done,” said Pfefier.

Pfeifer says we do live in a technology based world where most job applications are done online.

She says jobs fairs like these can provide a slight advantage when it comes to landing a job.
