Crime map highlights property crimes in the Brooks area

BROOKS, AB – The City of Brooks has brought in a new technology to help residents see where crimes are happening in the community.

The Alberta RCMP’s Crime Mapping tool is now available on the City of Brooks website.

It shows residents in Brooks and Newell County where issues like property crime are occurring.

The map reveals where instances of mischief, missing persons, break and enters, stolen vehicles, theft from motor vehicles and theft under and over $5000 are happening.

The RCMP chose crimes that have the greatest potential for deterrence, and will leave the postings up for two weeks.

“We’re not actually pinpointing the exact location, but they will be in the general neighbourhood of the occurrence,” said Jolene Fraser, safe communities facilitator for the City of Brooks. “That way people are aware it’s happening in their neighbourhood and it just gets their neighbourhood talking and it’s just the community engagement we’re looking for.”

The tool is meant to support community engagement by providing the public with resources and information around public safety.

“It’s just easier for citizens to be aware of what’s happening in their community and really we just want citizens to report suspicious activity that they may be seeing as well,” said Fraser.

The mapping tool will be available to communities across the province, but it’s up to the municipalities themselves to implement the service.

Cypress County also recently voted to implement a crime map onto their website, though it’s not in operation just yet.

The Medicine Hat Police Service operates their own crime mapping system, that can be found by clicking HERE.
