MEDICINE HAT, AB – The weekly points race took a back seat for drivers at the Medicine Hat Speedway, as they celebrated the life of one of their own over the weekend.

Drivers in five classes hit the track for the annual Darryl Adams Memorial Weekend, racing in memory of Adams who was a mainstay at the Speedway for much of his life.

The annual Darryl Adams Memorial trophy went to 14-year-old Kaylee Wilkie, winning the award for the first time after posting the most accumulative points the mini-cup class.

Wilkie won three races over the course of the weekend, and was either first or second in all eight of her heats.

On hand to present the award was the Adams family, who made the trip to Medicine Hat for the weekend.

Elite street stock racer Jareme Koska finished as one of the runners-up for the award after winning both days of racing in his division over the weekend.

That included on Saturday night, when Koska went wire-to-wire to take the checkered flag despite a 30 minute delay after a motor leaked oil around the entire track.

“It started out really well,” said Koska. “I started on the pole so I’m out front to start and I kept it the whole time even after the blown motor, the two cautions and everything. So, that was good.”

Al Patterson and Mitch Stovka finished second and third to Koska on Saturday, while Wil Voth and Conor Hirch took home podium finishes in the main event Sunday.

It was second and third place finishes for Owen Harbour and Emma Fitzpatrick in mini-cups on Saturday, before Fitzpatrick won Sunday’s heat over Wilkie and Harbour.

Jake Sissons and Trevor Stratton were main event winners in hobby stocks, while Alysha Stratton and Rob Gale earned silver medal finishes in their division. Meanwhile, it was a pair of third place showings from Shane Goldie in his number 21 car.

Taking the checkered flags in the baby grands division over the weekend were Doug Voisey and Sara-Jo Paquette, racing to first place finishes.

Voisey earned a second place finish on Sunday with Faith Luther taking bronze, while Rick Jondreau and Joe Paquette were runners-up the previous night.

Koska said the weekend has special meaning for so many drivers, wanting to race their best for a man who gave so much back to the track.

“It’s a good cause,” he said. “His family comes out every year I know and they really appreciate it. Everybody here is always looking forward to the Darryl Adams Weekend, it’s always a good weekend. Lots of cars show up and it’s always good racing.”

The next race day at the Speedway is set for August 25 featuring five classes, including the return of the super truck division.
