EDMONTON, AB — The Medicine Hat Mavericks returned to their winning ways with authority Wednesday night.

Zack Gray and Carson Johnson connected for three hits and a pair of RBI each, helping secure a convincing 14-3 victory over the Edmonton Prospects at ReMax Field.

The Mavericks now lead their best-of-five WMBL Championship Series 2-1, and can book a ticket to the league final with a win Thursday night in Edmonton.

Jumpei Akanuma lasted seven innings, and was nearly flawless after allowing the Prospects to score three in the first. The Kyoto, Japan product allowed six hits to coincide with six scoreless innings thrown on the mound. David Vilches cruised through the final two frames without giving up a single hit and three strikeouts.

Medicine Hat, coming off a stingy 7-6 loss the previous night to the Prospects, chalked up back-to-back six-spots in the fourth and fifth innings. They added another pair of runs in the eighth.

Edmonton is now tasked with the challenge of facing elimination against a team that’s scored at least 10 runs in three of the past four contests.

Gray extended his hit streak to five games, which included a two-run dinger in the fourth to also score Colton Wright. The Henderson State University senior has left the park three times this post-season, the most of any Maverick.

Game 4 from ReMax Field goes at 7:05 p.m.
