Animal rescue group working to save three abandoned cats

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Three kittens are being brought back from the brink of death with the help of a local animal shelter.

Earlier this week, Persian Dreams and Canine Themes Rescue Society received a call about a group of four kittens that were found abandoned on a range road and not moving outside of the city.

“She picked them up, brought them into the house, and was calling some of the other rescues in town to see if anybody could help,” said Samantha Lole, president of Persian Dreams.

Sadly, one of the kittens died from its injuries.

Throughout the week, the remaining three kittens have been in a foster home. Lole adds the kittens, which she estimates are three to four weeks old, are being fed a milk replacement to help rebuild their strength, as they can’t yet eat solid foods.

“I’m not going to say they’re out of the woods yet,” she said. “They’re coming to the vet every day and having fluids. They still have very upset tummies, so we’re still having issues keeping them hydrated. One of them is still very skinny, so we’re trying to get some meat on him and get him going. It will take a while before they’re out of the woods.”

Lole says animal shelters in Medicine Hat have been dealing with an increase in the amount of cats or kittens in their care. The Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre recently announced it would be suspending intake of cats from Redcliff and Cypress County due to a lack of space in its shelter.

She adds they’re hoping more people can become foster parents for animals, and take steps to control the pet population, to ensure shelters are not overwhelmed.

“All the rescues in town are at capacity, no one’s able to take on any more,” she said. “We’re lucky with these guys we heard about them when we did, but unfortunately, a lot of cats don’t get so lucky, because nobody does spay or neuter their animals.”

Anyone interested in becoming a foster owner with Persian Dreams can contact them through their website or on Facebook.

Lole says the cats likely won’t be ready for adoption for another month or two.
