MEDICINE HAT, AB – Local baseball star Andie Suhai will sport the blue and yellow of Team Alberta not once, but twice this summer after being named to two provincial teams.

The 13-year-old member of the Medicine Hat Junior AA All-Star team will be playing for both the U14 and U16 teams in tournaments later this summer.

Suhai said it came as a complete surprise not only to make the U14 team, but to be named to the older U16 squad as well.

“I was very excited and very shocked,” said Andie. “Because, I just think it’s so cool that I get to travel with these girls playing at a high level of baseball, and I was invited into that which is really awesome.”

Suhai played for the Team Alberta last year, but this will be her first taste of action with the U16 team as she joins some player two years older than her.

Her father Kevin also serves as her coach and said it’s going to be a good challenge for the young speedster.

“We’re excited about it,” said Kevin. “She’s going to be one of the young ones on there, and it’ll be good for her to see how some of the older girls play and how they compete.”

Medicine Hat’s Libby Bourassa was also selected to join Suhai with the U14 team, but had to turn down the invite due to prior commitments.

This announcement marks a watershed summer for young female baseball players in the city, as Medicine Hat ‘A’ K of C Knights player Kaitlyn Ross was named to Canada’s national team.

Andie said it’s an exciting time for female baseball in Medicine Hat and hopes more young girls will consider sticking in the sport.

“I think it’s really awesome because we are a smaller city,” she said. “To see that a lot of girls are coming up to play on a high level of baseball from just this city and working really hard, it’s awesome. And, to see more girls come up to play baseball is really cool.”

First up for Suhai will be the Western Canada U14 Championships in Spruce Grove from August 16 to 19, which will be followed by the Canadian U16 Invitational Championships the following week in Bedford, Nova Scotia.
