Podium finishes for locals as 2018 Alberta Summer Games wind up

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB – Three days of competition came to an end on Sunday in Grande Prairie, as the 2018 Alberta Summer Games drew to a close for another cycle.

Athletes from Medicine Hat, Brooks, Bassano, Patricia, Irvine, and Cypress County all picked up medals over the final two days of events to help Zone 1 to a seventh-place finish in the medal count.

One of Zone 1’s seven gold medals was won by Jessica Philpott out of Brooks, winning the 15 and under female javelin event with a throw of 34.74 metres.

Medicine Hat swimmer Kristin Hollingworth continued her exceptional games, winning another three medals with a silver in Category 4 female 200 metre freestyle, a bronze in Category 4 female 100 metre individual medley, and a bronze in female 12-13 4×50 metre freestyle relay.

That brought Hollingworth’s weekend in the pool to lead Zone 1 with six medals, earning two silvers and four bronzes.

Her teammate Kaitlin Skrove also won a bronze as part of Zone 1’s team in the female 12-13 4×50 metre freestyle relay.

Berlin Mastel brought home a silver in Category 2 female 50 metre freestyle and a bronze in Category 2 female 100 metre breaststroke, bringing her weekend total to four medals.

Medicine Hat’s Parker Maxwell earned his third medal of the Alberta Summer Games in Category 2 male 100 metre individual medley, while Ashton Scholly also won his third medal in Category 2 male 50 metre freestyle.

The rest of the local medals on Saturday and Sunday came on the track, as a number of top-three finishes were reported in athletics.

It was a silver medal for the 17 and under male 4×100 metre relay team, as Zachary Campbell, Orin May, and Gage Reinhart all took home second place with a time of 45.66 seconds.

The trio also went home with bronze medals around their necks, picking up a third-place finish in the 17 and under male medley relay along with Joshua Suelze.

The podium finish brought Suelze’s final tally on the weekend to three silvers won in discus, javelin and shot put, and a bronze in the relay.

As for Reinhart, the Irvine product was also a silver medallist in 17 and under male 300 metre hurdles with a team-best time of 42.35 seconds.

Justina Renke from Cypress County stepped on the podium with a second-place finish in 15 and under female javelin to take silver.

Medicine Hat’s Jaylaina Callan threw a distance of 9.62 metres in 15 and under female shot put, good enough to earn her a bronze medal.

It was a silver medal finish for Patricia’s Calder Morris in 17 and under male hammer throw, while Morgan Hale from Bassano won bronze in 17 and under female 800 metres.

After three days of events, Zone 1 finished in seventh out of eight teams with seven gold, 22 silver, and 23 bronze for a grand total of 52 medals.

Calgary won the medal count for the second straight Alberta Summer Games, crushing the field for 87 gold and 191 total medals.

The 2019 Alberta Masters Games will be held in Rocky Mountain House, while the 2020 Alberta Winter Games will be hosted by the City of Airdrie.
