MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city is one of six communities benefiting from provincial funding for emergency response teams.

Earlier this week, the province announced $2.6 million in grants for communities to help coordinate and train emergency response teams. Medicine Hat will be receiving $200,000.

The groups will be trained to help respond to emergencies and disasters such as floods and fires. The funding will also enable sharing of resources around the province.

“I think the province recognized that it was needed,” said Medicine Hat MLA Bob Wanner.  “We’ve had various incidents, and secondly, we have a good track record of being able to deliver, keep people safe, keep property safe. I think (the funding) is a recognition that we’re a leader in this regard.”

Wanner adds the training will ensure area emergency response teams can keep their skills sharp before disaster strikes.

“We know not when the bell shall toll, and when those incidents are,” he said. “Technical training is very important. I think the people that work on the front line will appreciate and see that they have an opportunity what we’ve already been doing here.”

In addition to Medicine Hat, Calgary, High Level, Cold Lake, Red Deer County and the Capital Region Emergency Preparedness Partnership Society also received funding.
