MEDICINE HAT, AB – City council took a step forward Monday night when it comes to preparations for the impending legalization of cannabis, and where it can be purchased and sold.

During Monday’s city council meeting, councillors voted 6-1 in favour of the proposed zones, which were introduced in a municipal planning commission meeting a month ago. Approved locations include parts of downtown and the light industrial area.

The meeting also saw a motion brought forward to determine if the city will follow the Alberta Health Services guidelines, meaning retail spaces would need to be 100 metres away from a school or treatment areas.

Mayor Ted Clugston says residents were vocal in a city survey earlier this year about where cannabis can be sold, saying they don’t want shops on every corner.

He believes council made the right decision

“We had a public hearing last night, kind of an open house,” he said. “Nobody came down to speak, except for Alberta Health Services. That kind of tells us we got it mostly right.

Clugston says the next step for council is to look at the cost of a business licence for cannabis stores and then set rules regarding public consumption.
