APARC temporarily suspending cat intake from Redcliff and Cypress County due to space issues

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre says they are not currently accepting cats from outside Medicine Hat in its shelter.

The organization made the announcement on Facebook on Monday, saying they are suspending intake from Redcliff and Cypress County at the moment due to space limitations.

“Right now, we are contractually obligated to serve Medicine Hat first,” said Kaylyn Genio, general manager of APARC. “As we have space, we can accept animals outside of Medicine Hat city, but right now, we’re overrun with cats, we don’t have adoptions flying out of the doors, so we do have to serve Medicine Hat first, and look at the county and outside areas like Redcliff later on.”

Genio says there are approximately 100 cats in APARC’s care, either in the shelter or with foster families. She says the summer months tend to the busiest for the shelter, as more kittens are being surrendered, and adds there are a number of adult cats still needing to be adopted.

“We’re looking for adopters mostly, we would like people to come adopt the adult cats and the kittens,” she said. “Fosters as well are greatly appreciated.”

Genio adds adds residents can also take precautions to help keep shelter numbers at a healthy level.

“Summer is usually a busier time for us for sure, so if people could be considered to spay or neuter their animals, it does cut down on intake for us,” she said. “As well, if we could get those adoptions out for cats, then we have less trouble with room.”

Genio says the suspension will be lifted when more space is available.

The shelter will still accept cats from the county and Redcliff if residents find them in medical distress. If a cat is found in medical distress, call the shelter at 403-487-5671.
