MEDICINE HAT, AB – It was a perfect tournament for the pairing of Lauren Danroth and Trevor Riddell, capturing the Medicine Hat Tennis Club’s Summer Mixed Doubles title on Saturday night.

The team of Danroth and Riddell torched through the round-robin with an undefeated 4-0 record, before winning their semi-final match and advancing to the open division final.

Squaring off against the duo of Kristen Norris and Craig Weich, the Danroth/Riddell team was victorious in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to win the mixed doubles title.

Danroth said they had to battle the elements, but was glad to come out on top with her new partner.

“The weather was challenging today, lots of wind but it was a good time,” said Danroth. “I hadn’t played with Trevor before, so it was just a fun experience.”

Despite this weekend’s tournament being the first time the pair played together, Riddell was formerly Danroth’s coach when she first got into the sport.

She said the chemistry developed early with Riddell and added it was a good feeling knowing he was on her side of the court.

“I just trusted him,” she said. “I knew he was going to be there and he carried us I would say.”

Serving was a big part of Danroth and Ridell’s game, as they got up early in games on the Norris/Weich team and didn’t allow them a chance to rally.

Danroth said it was encouraging to see some consistency in her game, especially on the serving side.

“I think we just kept hitting hard and just kept the momentum going,” she said. “We were serving pretty well and I think that made a difference.”

The consolation final in the open bracket was won by the tandem of Eryn and Ryan Comeau, who took down Reina and Jordan Schibler 8-5.

In the intermediate division, the championship trophy was won by the team of Wai-Cheng Pretzlaw and Lyle Garrecht after defeating Nicole Hall and James Thorogood 8-3.

Lily and Gary Laurent were victorious in the intermediate consolation final meanwhile, winning a tight 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 match against Susan Jacques and Noel Thomas.

Club members will break for the next month before returning to the court on August 22 to kick off the Medicine Hat Singles and Doubles Open Tournament.
