MEDICINE HAT, AB — The 27th Annual Garden Tours took place today in Medicine Hat.

A ticket got you access to seven gardens all over the city where you could take self guided tour.

Mel Deydye, vice president of the Medicine Hat and District Horticulture Society, says every yard is different and will surprise everyone with what has been done with the space.

“A yard on the Southeast Hill is apart of a heritage home, and it is a beautiful yard, the homeowner has built many of the hardscapes themselves, including a beautiful outdoor kitchen,” said Deydey.

He says there was another yard that backs onto the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club that is quite large and the homeowners do a wonderful job of incorporating treasures they’ve found into the yard.

The homeowner says she dedicates around 20 hours a week towards upkeep of the space.

Around 600 tickets were sold and Deydey says everyone in attendance were taking notes on how they could make improvements to their own yards.

“Today we’ve noticed that there are homeowners who are on the tour and they said I think we can incorporate a pond into our yard, or we could incorporate this into our yard,” said Deydey.

He says the tour is a showcase of many of Medicine Hat’s beautiful gardens along with a learning experience for residents who may have just purchased a home with a yard, and need help with what to do with it.
