MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs will have another option between the pipes when their main training camp opens up in September.

The Cubs have inked 18-year-old netminder Brett Vanderveer after spending this past season with the Martensville ‘AA’ Maurauders out of the Centre Four Hockey League in Saskatchewan.

In 13 games with the Marauders, Vanderveer posted a 6-6-1 record with a 3.69 goals against average and a .901 save percentage.

The Grandora, Saskatchewan product also attended last month’s Western Canada Junior Hockey Prospects Camp and was ranked as a top-three prospect by the Cubs.

The Cubs are hoping Vanderveer will help fill the gap of losing Josh Breznik, who the team confirmed is heading to the Oklahoma City Junior Blazers of the Western States Hockey League.

Acquired from the English River Miners of the SIJHL last year, Breznik played in 22 games with the Cubs, posting a 6-16-0 record with a 5.16 goals against average and a .889 save percentage.

Breznik endeared himself to Cubs fans during the playoffs however, stopping 80 of 81 shots in a Game 2 regulation victory over the Cochrane Generals to keep Medicine Hat’s season alive.

Vanderveer will join T.J. Goldie and Martyn Clift as goaltenders fighting for spots on the Cubs roster in the fall.

Medicine Hat’s training camp will run between September 7 and 9 at the Kinplex, while a regular season schedule has not yet been released by the HJHL.
