CALAHOO, AB – It’s still early, but the Medicine Hat U16 girls softball team is establishing itself as a contender at U16 ‘B’ provincials this weekend.

The Thunder pulled off a huge 14-3 victory over the Lloydminster Liners on Saturday afternoon to improve their record to 3-0 in tournament play.

Medicine Hat scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead on Liners, with the Thunder doubling their lead to 6-2 in the second.

Lloydminster closed the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the third inning, but that was until the Thunder exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning highlighted by a Makayla Clarke grand slam.

The Thunder blanked the Liners in the fourth to win 14-3 and stay undefeated in round-robin action.

Medicine Hat also rallied from a seven-run deficit in their earlier game against the Regina Rage, scoring eight runs in the fifth inning to win a 12-11 thriller.

One round-robin game remains for the Thunder before the playoff round, as they battle the host Calahoo Erins at 3:00 pm on Saturday.

The provincial championship will be handed out on Sunday afternoon with the gold medal game at 2:30 pm.
