MEDICINE HAT, AB — With some help from the Connaught Golf Club, the Medicine Hat Lawn Bowling Club playing surface has been given new life.

Dustin Zdan, golf course superintendent with Connaught, has been working with the Lawn Bowling Club for the past month, returning the grass field to its former glory.

“We are so grateful to him for the work he has done,” said Joan Theriault, vice-president of the Lawn Bowling Club

Theriault says the club was in “dire need” of help restoring its field after it was damaged during the past two winters. They went to the city’s parks and recreation department at first, who suggested they try speaking with Zdan at Connaught.

“He dropped over and said the magic words,” she said. “He said ‘Yes, I think I can help you.”

Zdan says he and his team have spent roughly a month fertilizing, watering and cutting the field.

“Connaught has donated some equipment, I have been donating my time, we over seeded it, top dressed it, aerated it, and we’ve kind of been nursing it back to health,” he said.

Zdan adds they will continue to help the club moving forward.

“We’re not just going to stop helping them out,” he said. “We’re going to keep doing it long-term, make sure they have good greens for the near future.”

The Lawn Bowling Club, located at 47 Third Street Southeast, will be playing on the field for the first time on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and the public is welcome to come out and give it a try. They are also hosting the Medicine Hat Memorial Triples Tournament on July 21 and 22, featuring players from across Alberta.
