City issues coyote alert

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city parks and recreation department is getting more calls about coyotes in the city and want residents to be aware and know what to do if they spot one.

Coyotes are common around this time of year and have been seen in the Connaught and Family Leisure Centre areas.

Staff will be posting signs, warning residents the animals may be in the area and workers will be monitoring the areas on a regular basis.

“More or less what we’re trying to do is find these locations, make sure people are aware by either signage, etc. and that our last resort, if need be, is to unfortunately go in there to possibly look at a form of control, to either get them out of the area or relocation, etc. that’s permissible for us to do,” said Dave Genio with the Parks and Recreation department.

The city says coyotes are more active in the evening and early mornings and say you should respond in an aggressive manner if you come across one.

Other tips include:

  • Shouting and backing away slowly
  • Secure any household garbage in garbage bins
  • Keep dogs on a leash and don’t allow your pets to roam free

The city is also reminding dog owners to pick up after their pets and say dog feces and urine may attract coyotes.
