MEDICINE HAT, AB – Usually it takes drivers years of experience to hone their skills at the Medicine Hat drag strip.

But, a handful of junior racers are bucking the trend and were able to showcase their skills over the weekend.

It was the annual Junior Dragster Challenge at the drag strip, as young drivers hit the track to compete for specialized trophies.

Kyle Wagenaar won his second race of the season on Sunday, while Kyler Skjonsberg raced to second place and his third podium finish of the year.

The 13-year-old has spent the last six years on the track learning the sport and said his family has a big role in his success.

“It’s a family thing because my grandfather used to race, my dad he races,” said Skjonsberg. “It’s my turn to start racing, so I might as well get into it earlier, sooner than later I guess.”

Sitting second overall in the Junior Lightning standings with 286 points and his in the thick of points races every weekend.

Facing off against 13 other drivers in his division, he said a weekend like the Junior Dragster Challenge helps to encourage more competitors their own age.

“It’s a good way to advertise things,” said Skjonsberg. “I think it’s a sport that honestly all kids should get into if they want to learn about cars. It’s great, I enjoy using wrenches and stuff like that.”

Juniors and their older counterparts will take a few weeks off before returning to the drag strip on July 27 to kick off the NHRA National Open weekend.
