Officials issue river safety reminder for the city

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Local emergency officials say the South Saskatchewan River can be a great resource but are reminding everyone to be prepared.

The fire department suggests checking the weather and water flow before heading out and making sure the proper equipment, like a life jacket, are packed.

Fire safety officer Carter Gramlich said they’ve worked closely with the parks department on creating a web page for river safety.

It lets people know current river levels and how to prepare for a float down stream.

Gramlich said people have been using the river for months and he doesn’t want anyone to be afraid of the water.

“It’s a great place to go and cool off,” Gramlich said. “It’s a great resource that we have in Medicine Hat. We just want you to plan ahead, we want you to be prepared. Where there’s water, there’s risk so anytime you’re going out near the water, you should be cautious. If you’re going in or on the water, make sure you’re wearing a life jacket.”
