MEDICINE HAT, AB — Five years after flood waters rendered it unusable, the new and improved Veiner Centre is ready to be used once again.

The city is ready to open up the doors to the new and improved Veiner Centre on July 24. The event is open to the public and gets underway from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

“It’s been a long journey, but I think people will be extremely impressed with how it’s turned out, and we’re very excited about it, and looking forward to getting it back in use,” said Howard Snodgrass, general manager of community development with the city.

The building sustained significant damage in the 2013 floods. Since then, seniors’ activities have primarily been run out of the Strathcona Centre.

“From the user’s perspective, it’s important because a lot of the clubs are operating out of churches and other buildings for quite some time now, so it will nice to be able to get everything back into those two buildings again.”

The new building will feature a new kitchen and dining room, games room, craft room and multi-purposes rooms. The Strathcona Centre will continue to be the location of the more physical activities and clubs, as well as the fitness centre.

On July 16th, the Strathcona Centre will be closed for minor renovations and to help finish the transition to the Veiner Centre. Club activities will take place in other facilities and Fitness Centre at Crestwood Pool will be open.
