REGINA, SASK — RCMP in Saskatchewan have laid charges against a semi driver in connection with the Humboldt Broncos bus collision.

Jaskirat Sidhu, 29, was arrested Friday morning at approximately 10 a.m. in Calgary, according to an RCMP news conference. Sidhu has been charged with 16 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

Sidhu is currently in custody, and will make his first appearance in Saskatoon provincial court next week, though a date has not been finalized.

RCMP say the families of the players were notified Friday morning.

The charges come three months to the day of a deadly bus crash near Armley, Saskatchewan. The semi and the bus carrying the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team collided at the intersection at Highway 35 and Highway 335. The bus was on its way to Nipawin for a playoff game.

The crash killed 16 people on the bus, including 10 players, and injured 13 others.

Sidhu was working for Adesh Deol Trucking Ltd at the time of the collision. The company had its safety fitness certificate suspended by the Alberta Ministry of Transportation three days following the collision.
