AHS reminding residents to be safe during heat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s time to make sure you have lots of water on hand and your air conditioner is working, as the temperature is going to get warm over the next several days.

A heat warning was issued for Medicine Hat and area by Environment Canada, with temperatures expected to reach a high of 37 degrees on Friday.

Dr. Vivien Suttorp, Medical Officer of Health with the South Zone, says it’s important for people to drink lots of water, wear sun screen and do what it takes to keep cool and avoid heat exhaustion.

She says to take the following steps if you are feeling heat exhaustion or see someone else showing the symptoms.

“When people are feeling dizzy, nauseous, faint, get them out of the sun,” she said. “They may need to be cooled off, like take a layer off for example. Give them fluids – water is probably the quickest, easiest thing – and rest. And then observe them to ensure they’re not progressing to heat stroke.”

Pools, water parks, and spots with lots of shade were popular in Medicine Hat on Thursday, as several people CHAT Television spoke with said the weather was a bit warmer than they would have liked.

“Well, I like summer weather, but this heat is a little too warm,” one woman said in Lions Park. “37 and 40 is a little too warm.”

“I like it warm, but not 35 when you’re playing,” a man said after playing pickleball on the tennis courts.”

A woman at the Strathcona Island Water Park says “probably anything over 30 degrees” is too hot for her if there is no water park nearby, though she can handle warmer heat when she is near a water park.

The weather is currently forecast to remain above 30 degrees Celsius into next week.
