MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former basketball player with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers will be returning to the team behind the bench this fall.

Courtney Henry has been selected to be a part of the Female Apprentice Coach program run by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) for the 2018-19 season. Henry will be mentored by her former head coach Clayton Nielsen during the season.

The program, now in its 14th season, pairs females interested in coaching sports with mentors who will help them develop their coaching skills.

“It is exciting to have Courtney continue her involvement with the women’s basketball program as an assistant coach,” Nielsen wrote in a statement provided to CHAT News. “Courtney’s involvement in the CCAA Female Apprentice Coaching Program gives us the resources to assist her development and it provides the opportunity for Courtney to be a strong role model to the young female athletes in and around Medicine Hat” said Coach Nielsen.

Henry finished her playing career in 2018 with an appearance at the 2018 CCAA National Championship with the Rattlers. She will continue to study education at Medicine Hat College while she is helping coach the team.

“I’m so excited to be a part of the Rattlers basketball program for another year!” Henry said in a statement. “It will be a change from being on the floor but I’m looking forward to seeing the game in a different light on the sideline.  I’m thankful for all of the love and support I’ve received and I can’t wait to be a part of the team in a different way.”
