MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association hosted the 10th annual Beat the Heat skateboarding competition at the Kinsmen Skate Plaza on Canada Day.

Over one hundred skaters tried their best win a share of $6000 in cash or $14,000 in skate gear.

For Corey Smith, event participant, this was a chance to test his skills at a large scale event.

“It’s great man, everyone’s throwing down, we’re all out here having fun it’s probably one of the better events in Canada so it’s definitely a good time.

They went big for the 10th annual event creating the Carnival of Carnage which had five events that were a little more on the extreme side.

The Rona Retro Grab, Little Buddah’s King of the Ring, The DabCor Kickflip Challenge, Local Lanuch, and the Medicine Hat Brew Co Keg Jump.

Each event pushed the boundaries of each competitor.

Curtis Windover, Coordinator of Beat the Heat, says he’s surprised each year at what each competitor can do.

“Skateboarders are some of the most like brave and talented people in the world and so it’s cool that we can be recognized for it and to me, it just lets you see what’s possible like we do something like this every year and it works and it’s like well what else could you do,” said Windover.  “I don’t know, the sky’s the limit.”

Windover says the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association has worked hard over the past 15 years to give back to the community to show their potential.
