Mavericks win in extras, tie longest win streak of the year at 10

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Mavericks battled back from a three run deficit to defeat the Swift Current 57s 4-3 in extra innings.

The win brings Medicine Hat’s record to 20-3 and was their tenth consecutive victory for a second time this year.

Canada Day brought out 1,825 fans which was the largest attendance at Athletic Park in 20 years and the large crowd was rewarded with a Mavericks win.

Swift Current got things going early, as Ethan Hunter scored from third on a wild pitch in the top of the first.

It was a pitchers duel after that until the top of the sixth, the 57s got their second run via another wild pitch that scored Blake Adams.

Johnathon Smithey entered the game in the top of the eight for the Mavericks and the first batter he faced, Bo McClintock, took Smithey deep to put Swift Current up by three.

Medicine Hat came alive in the bottom half of the inning with Zach Grey getting on base via base on balls.

Singles from Nolan Rattai and Louie Canjura loaded up the bases and with two outs Julien Ly was hit by a pitch that scored Grey from third to get the Mavericks on the board.

Jordan Dray was up next and his single plated Rattai and Canjura to tie the game up at three.

Neither team was bale to score a run in the ninth which meant the fans were treated to some free baseball.

Both teams had base runners in the tenth but neither team could push across the winning run.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the eleventh where Colton Wright started the inning off with a walk.

Grey singled on a 3-1 count to give the Mavericks runners on first a second with no outs.

Rattai was up next and placed a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third baseline to move the winner run up to third base.

The stage was set for Canjura who hit a fly ball just deep enough out in left to score a tagging Wright from third base to give Medicine Hat the 4-3 victory.

Starting pitcher Matt Brooks went a strong seven innings for the Mavericks giving up two runs and striking out 11.

Tyler Shumpert got the win in relief throwing two shutout innings, not allowing a hit and striking out three of the seven batters he faced.

Dray was 1 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBIs and Ly was patient at the plate reaching 4 four times despite not recording a single at bat.

Medicine Hat will be in tough tonight as they try to extend their winning streak to a season high eleven games.

The Weyburn Beavers (20-5) are in town for a two game series against the Mavericks (20-3) which will see the two top teams in the WMBL face off.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Athletic Park.
