ALERT arrests Sylvan Lake doctor on child exploitation offences

SYLVAN LAKE, AB — The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team has arrested and charged a family doctor from Sylvan Lake with child exploitation offences.

Dr. Fred Janke was arrested in Edmonton on Thursday by members of the Edmonton Police Service and the Internet Child Exploitation unit. The 62-year-old is facing charges of making arrangements to commit sexual offences against a child, making child pornography and distribution of child pornography.

Janke has worked as a doctor in Sylvan Lake for almost 30 years.

According to ALERT, Janke had allegedly been engaged in sexually explicit conversations with a person he met online dating back to October 2017. The sexual conversations allegedly progressed to Janke attempting to arrange for sex with the person’s five-year-old daughter.

The daughter did not exist, and Janke was actually speaking with an undercover operator with the Victoria Police Department. Officers were conducting an online investigation involving a website that allegedly hosted chat rooms geared towards child sex.

When investigators determined the suspect was based in Alberta, the information was referred to ALERT.
