MELVILLE, SK – Errors were once again the story between the Medicine Hat Mavericks and Melville Millionaires, but on Wednesday night it was the Mils on the undisciplined side.

Medicine Hat responded from a late start to earn a 5-2 over Melville to sweep their two-game set and earn their seventh straight win.

Alex Dafoe and Lyle Hibbitts went back and forth over the first four innings in a scoreless pitching duel, before the Millionaires were able to open the scoring.

With no out in the fourth, Melville’s Keaton Sullivan singled to score Ryan Tackett to put the home side up 1-0.

The Millionaires added another run before the end of the inning, doubling their lead on Medicine Hat heading to the fifth inning.

After a scoreless fifth, Medicine Hat found the score board after a pass ball in the sixth inning from Hibbitts allowed Carson Johnson to score to cut the deficit in half.

Not too long after, outfielder Jaxson Hooge smacked a double to score Zack Gray from third base to get the score back to even.

Colton Wright made his impact in the seventh inning, scoring the eventual game-winning runs off a single to cash David Vilches and Jordan Dray.

An error from Melville short stop Ricky Hockett allowed Johnson to touch home plate for the second time on the night, capping off an evening where the Millionaires racked up seven errors.

Relief pitchers Barry Caine and Sean Cruz were surgical over the final three innings on Wednesday, allowing just a single hit and preserving a 5-2 win for the Mavericks.

Registering just five hits on the night, Medicine Hat’s only two RBIs of the night came off the bats of Wright and Hooge in the seventh inning.

Dafoe lasted six innings for the Mavericks, earning the win with only four hits and one earned run given up while collecting five strikeouts.

Since losing their first two games of the season, the Mavericks have been the WMBL’s hottest team with 17 wins over their last 18 games.

Still holding a three-game lead in the West Division over the Okotoks Dawgs, Medicine Hat is now just one game back of the Weyburn Beavers for the best record in the league.

Sporting a perfect 3-0 record on their road trip so far, the 17-3 Mavericks now head to Yorkton for a pair of games against the Cardinals on Thursday and Friday.

Both games will get underway at 7:05 pm at Jubilee Park.
