MELVILLE, SK – A two-run deficit didn’t hold the Medicine Hat Mavericks back on Tuesday night, rallying for a 13-9 victory over the Melville Millionaires.

Kicking off a four-game swing in Saskatchewan, the Mavericks were trying to extend their five-game win streak against Melville.

With David Salgueiro waiting on third base, Zack Gray opened the offence with a sacrifice fly for Medicine Hat in the first inning.

Melville quickly tied up the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning after cashing in a run from a fielder’s choice.

Carson Johnson came through with an RBI single in the second, but Melville answered back with Justin Braziel and Nik Pagan driving in runs to give the Millionaires their first lead 3-2.

Medicine Hat tied the game the following inning with an RBI single from Sal Rodriguez, before a throwing error from the Millionaires allowed two more Mavericks runs to score.

Colton Wright padded Medicine Hat’s lead in the top of the fifth inning with his fourth home run of the season to make it a 6-3 game, but that’s when the game took a turn.

An error from Jaymon Cervantes on the mound cut the Millionaires deficit to two runs, just before Keaton Sullivan drilled a three-run homer to give Melville a 7-6 advantage.

Medicine Hat swapped out Cervantes for Junior Pimentel, but Melville was quick on a pass ball shortly after to make it an 8-6 contest heading to the sixth.

The Mavericks got their groove back when they returned to the plate, which was kicked off by Michael Conn taking Taylor Roberge deep for a three run shot.

Johnson came through again with the bat, bringing home Salgueiro to increase the Mavericks lead to 10-8.

A wild pitch would bring Medicine Hat’s sixth inning output to five runs, putting Medicine Hat comfortably into an 11-8 lead.

Trying to give his team a spark, Sullivan converted a sacrifice fly to left field to rack up his fifth RBI of the night to bring his club within two runs.

Putting a stamp on the night, Medicine Hat brought two more runs around the bases in the ninth inning to secure their sixth straight win in comeback fashion 13-9.

Throwing two and two-thirds innings, Pimentel was credited with the win for the Mavericks after allowing just two hits and one earned run while posting four strikeouts.

Conn was the RBI leader on the night for Medicine Hat despite only posting one hit, with his three RBIs coming off his home run in the sixth inning.

Combined with an Okotoks Dawgs loss on Tuesday, the Mavericks have moved three games clear of first place in the West Division with a 16-3 record.

Medicine Hat and Melville will meet back at Pirie Field on Wednesday night to close out their two-game set, first pitch will go at 7:05 pm.
