MEDICINE HAT – A local fencing company has scored a major contract with Aurora Cannabis.

Rite-Way Fencing Inc. in Redcliff, has been chosen to install the perimeter and internal fencing for the project.

Work is currently happening on the site which will be home to Aurora Sun, the world’s largest marijuana production and processing facility.

“We’re pretty stoked,” said branch manager Michael Speiran. “It’s just a huge deal for the community and we’re pretty excited just to be part of the whole process.”

The contract is even larger than Speiran had anticipated and said it will allow them to hire on more people and even dole out work to other local companies.

“Originally we estimated around a quarter million dollars, so it’s huge,” Speiran said. “We’ll hire a couple extra crews, but also subcontracting a little bit out as well.”

“We’re able to hire local people and just kind of keep the cash flow streaming locally.”

Starks Plumbing, Heating and Electrical is currently doing some subcontracted work with an Edmonton-based company to prep the site for the development.

Starks also plans to bid on several contracts with Aurora including deep utilities, mechanical and electrical work. The company previously said the contracts would be worth around $30 million.

CHAT News has reached out to both Starks and Aurora for an update on the other contracts.
