South Korea suspends wheat imports after GMO plants discovered

EDMONTON — Another country has announced they’re suspending the import of Canadian wheat after genetically modified plants were discovered in Alberta.

South Korea announced Monday they have enacted a ban on Canadian wheat being imported into their country. It comes following a similar ban from Japan announced on Friday.

Last week, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced the plants were discovered near an access road in the County of Strathmore a year ago.

According to the agency, a contractor spraying for weeds discovered several plants were not killed by Roundup herbicide. Tests determined the plants were genetically modified to withstand herbicide.

Genetically modified wheat is not allowed to be grown commercially anywhere.

The agency says the wheat has not been found in food supply and was isolated to the access road. Health Canada adds there is no safety concerns.

South Korea imports approximately 235,000 tonnes of Canadian wheat a year.
