LETHBRIDGE, AB – Rain threatened to derail the Medicine Hat ‘AA’ Moose Monarchs on Saturday, but they pulled out a win in five innings at the Mary Oikawa Memorial Tournament.

Medicine Hat picked up a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Junior Dinos before the sky opened up, while the rest of Saturday’s games at the tournament were cancelled due to rain.

Tyran George opened the scoring in the second inning with a sacrifice fly that cashed Ethan Loran to put the Monarchs up 1-0.

Calgary fought back however, scoring a pair of runs with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the game.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Theryn Berndt served as the hero by smacking a line drive to centre field to bring Will Sharpe and Zach Stark around to score.

Veteran Braydon Pudwell pitched great over the final two innings, allowing just one hit down the stretch to give Medicine Hat their second win of the tournament 3-2.

Scoring the game-winning runs, Berndt was 2-for-3 on the morning and led the way with a pair of RBIs.

Moving to 2-0 on the tournament and 6-9 in league play this year, Medicine Hat wraps up their tournament on Sunday afternoon against the Calgary Redbirds.

As for the Medicine Hat ‘A’ K of C Knights, they dropped both of their games at home Saturday against the Great Falls Chargers.

Only trailing 6-4 against Great Falls in their opening game, the Knights allowed six runs in the seventh inning after a series of errors to suffer a 12-4 loss against the Montana-based club.

Jaden Schwindt was 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while starter Ayden Matycio picked up the loss on the mound with a three and two-thirds innings outing.

It was a much closer game in the second contest, as the Knights lead 6-3 after the fifth inning thanks to Jayden Ball and Heyden Harrison driving in runs.

That lead was short-lived however, as the Chargers netted four runs in the sixth to jump back into the driver’s seat 7-6.

Great Falls walked in a Medicine Hat run shortly after to tie up the score at 7-7, but an error from Knights shortstop Kobe Coderre allowed the winning run to score in the seventh for Great Falls.

The Knights outhit the Chargers 14-8 in the loss, while Josh Stark was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the loss with two RBIs.

Dropping their record on the season to 5-11, Medicine Hat wraps up the weekend with a two-game set on Sunday against the Vauxhall Spurs.
