Severe thunderstorm watch issued for region

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Medicine Hat and the surrounding area.

Environment Canada made the announcement just before 1 p.m. on Thursday. The alert says thunderstorms have developed across southeastern Alberta early in the afternoon and will continue during the day.

The alert says the storms are slow moving, and have the potential to produce over 50 millimetres of rain in a short period of time where they develop. The release adds there is a risk of funnel clouds with these storms.

In addition to the city, parts of the Cypress County, The County of Newell, the County of 40 Mile and Special Area No. 2 are under the watch. A full list of affected areas can be found here.
