MEDICINE HAT, AB — Ryan Hodgins is beginning to turn heads in the world of Canadian golf.

Six weeks into the competitive season, the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club member already has a pair of Maple Leaf Junior Championships to his name, and he nearly secured a Canadian Junior Golf Association title a few weeks ago, losing out in a playoff in Carstairs.

In addition to the already memorable summer, Hodgins will make his Canadian PGA debut next week, as he has earned an invite to the Paradise Canyon Open in Lethbridge. He is only 15 years old.

“It’s an honour to play in that with all of the pros,” he said earlier this week. “It’s really cool.”

Hodgins is crediting work with Trent Matson, his new golf coach, for his success this season. He says Matson has helped him with both his mental game and his ball striking, noticing the ball is travelling straighter each time he hits it.

“My swing has changed quite a bit,” he said. “It’s a lot higher now than it used to be, and it helps with the straightness.”

This weekend, Hodgins and other junior members of the Country Club will compete in the local qualifier for the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, which will be hosted by the Golf and Country Club from July 30 to August 2.

The two-day playoff gets underway Saturday afternoon.
