City discussing bylaw changes to allow cannabis retail stores

MEDICINE HAT, AB — With the legalization of cannabis expected later this year, preparations are underway for what the sale of the substance will look like.

During a meeting of the city’s municipal planning commission on Wednesday, changes to the city’s land use bylaw were brought forward. The changes would allow retail cannabis shops to set up in the city.

Areas proposed for retail cannabis include part of the light industrial area, parts of the city’s downtown and South Railway Street, Kingsway Avenue, and near Trans-Canada Way.

The zones were selected based on responses on the city’s cannabis survey, as well as proposed regulations from other levels of government, including distance from schools.

Councillor Brian Varga says the city is working hard to get ready for legalization.

“I think, as far as other municipalities are concerned, we’re quite a bit ahead of some of the other ones in their planning process,” he said following the meeting. “I think our planning department did a great job over the past year in figuring out where these nodes should be, and where these stores should be operating and up and running.”

The proposed amendment will be discussed at Monday’s city council meeting.
