MEDICINE HAT, AB — Colton Wright did a lot more than just scurry off a seventh inning critter interruption on Monday night.

The Surrey, B.C. product batted home a three-run shot in the sixth inning as well, paving the way to the Medicine Hat Mavericks 5-2 victory over the Brooks Bombers at Athletic Park. Less than an inning later, with a rabbit running rampant in front of the Mavericks dugout, Wright did the duty of hustling it clear of the park.

Medicine Hat has now won six straight to boast a 6-2 record. They sit tied with the Okotoks Dawgs for top spot in the Western Major Baseball League’s Western Division.

The Mavs connected for 10 hits, making it the Mavericks fourth straight game reaching double-digits in that category (and treating the home crowd to a free Wendy’s frosty). Brooks clocked 11 hits in the loss.

Wright, a junior out of Northeastern Oklahoma State who’s returning to the Mavericks fold after making his rookie debut last year, is on a relentless tear as of late. He’s riding a six-game hitting streak, chalking up 12 hits in that time. On top of that, the Canadian catcher has left the park in three of his last four games while averaging .444 at the dish.

This is the Mavericks second win over Brooks in less than a week. The Red and White crushed the Bombers 13-5 last week in Brooks, but lost to the Bombers in a delayed home-opener last Monday 9-6.

Brooks losing streak has now reached four games.

Leadoff outfielder David Salgueiro mashed out three hits and an RBI, and 2B Louie Canjura knocked out a pair of his own. Reed Odland of Enchant, AB connected on one opportunity at the dish, driving in a single run.

Jaymon Cervantes, making his second start of 2018, lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs but tossing aside five Bombers batters and allowing just two walks. Barry Caine replaced Cervantes and threw heat; striking out three, including a bases-loaded top of the seventh with two out, and allowed just one run. Sean Cruz relieved Caine in the eighth inning and cleared off three straight batters.

Tyler Shumpert finished the contest, giving up a single hit.

Zach Lehman led the stats front for the visiting Bombers, connecting for three hits on four opportunities, but was held without an RBI or a run.

Jonny Chavez lasted until the seventh frame, surrendering eight hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts for the Bombers.

Medicine Hat returns to action Tuesday night, taking a trip to Lethridge to battle the last-place Bulls.
