Damage left in Acadia Valley following weekend wind storm

HILDA, AB — The wind that wreaked havoc in Medicine Hat and the surrounding area was also present in Acadia Valley this weekend.

Brent Williams, the chief administrative officer for the region, says a plow wind tore through the region Saturday night. The wind saw gusts as high as 160 kilometres/hour, he said.

“We had some motor homes and camper trailers flipped on their sides and rolling,” he said in Hilda on Monday. “Some people were injured and hospitalized.”

“We had grain bins fall on semis, one yard lost four. My own house had an antenna tower fall down, and a 100-year-old tree collapse, though thankfully not on my house. It was significant. It was the strongest wind we’ve ever experienced on record.”

The power lines which were knocked over were the same lines which sparked a grass fire in Acadia Valley last October. No fires were reported on Saturday, however.

Williams adds cleanup was underway in the region on Monday.
