UPDATE: Medicine Hat man killed in early morning crash near Scandia

SCANDIA, AB – RCMP have confirmed the victim of a fatal crash near the community of Scandia was a 34-year-old local man.

Police were called to a bridge over the Bow River along Highway 36 at around 4:30 am on Saturday after receiving reports of a crash between a semi-trailer and a pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup from Medicine Hat died of his injuries, while the driver of the semi was taken to hospital with minor, non-life threatening injuries.

Diesel fuel from the semi’s fuel tank also leaked into the Bow River near Range Road 160, with hazardous materials and fire crews cleaning up the spill throughout the day.

According to RCMP, all emergency personnel have left the scene and there is currently no risk to the public in terms of fuel in the Bow River.

The cause of Saturday’s collision has not yet been released and police are awaiting a report from a collision analyst.
