MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat High School Mohawks are hoping to come home from Calgary this weekend with a Provincial Championship.

The rugby team, consisting of students from Hat High, Crescent Heights High School and Monsignor McCoy High School, punched their ticket to the ASAA Provincials on Monday, topping the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams 27-19 to win the South Zone Championship.

“It feels amazing,” said Cody Lyons, a Hat High student on the team. “I can’t say any words about it. It means the world.”

“It’s a nice feeling,” said Bretton Labash, who attends Crescent Heights High School. “It’s something I haven’t had the chance to do in a sport that I’m passionate about, ever.”

Head coach Quinn Skelton says merging the three high schools has been a positive experience this season.

“There’s been no animosity at all, no issues about what colour they’re playing for,” he said. “They’re all playing for one another. As a rugby collective, it’s been awesome bringing them together.”

Lyons and Labash, both Grade 12 students, are hoping to wrap up their high school careers on a positive note on the weekend.

“The expectations are high,” said Lyons. “I’m expecting a lot from our guys, our pack in particular, but out backs as well. I’m expecting to have some good rugby as well.”

“It means the world,” said Labash. “It’s the sport I’m probably most passionate about, up there with football. It’s just nice to be winning and get the appreciation and success that I feel I’ve worked my whole life for.”

The Mohawks get provincials underway on Friday against Lindsay Thurber High School. The game starts at 11:30 a.m.
