MEDICINE HAT, AB — An elderly woman was allegedly sexually assaulted while out for a walk on a pathway on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened on the walking trails near Division Avenue and 7th Street NW, the path system which leads down into the Riverside Area.

It was around 3:15 p.m. when the woman was walking in the area.

She was alone when a man grabbed her from behind and pulled her to the ground.

She started screaming for help and struggling to break free when the man let go of her and took off.

Officers did a search of the area but weren’t able to find him.

S/Sgt. Chad Holt said police were back in the area on Wednesday, talking with people who live nearby and searching for any video surveillance to help identify their suspect.

“It’s a unique situation and we’re really hoping that if anyone has any information that can assist police with the investigation, that were in and around that area at the top of Altawana Hill at Division, around 3:15 yesterday during the day, that saw anything that could help us identify a suspect, we would appreciate that,” he said.

Holt said the situation is very unusual for our city.

He said there are a few things you can do to protect yourself if you’re out and about this summer.

He suggests walking in pairs or with your dog, if it’s possible.

He adds staying in more public areas that are visible to anyone nearby is something else to keep in mind.

“I guess, most importantly, just always be aware of your surroundings to the best you can,” he said. “Be aware of who’s around you and where you’re going and let people know what time you’re leaving and what time you’re coming back.”

The suspect is described as a white man between 20 and 30 years old.

He stands about 5’ 8” with an average build.

He was wearing a blue hoodie and brown pants at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-529-8481.
