MEDICINE HAT, AB — One youth has been taken to hospital with minor burns after a fire broke out at a home on Cypress Way SE on Tuesday night.

Fire Chief Brian Stauth said the call came in around 7:25 p.m.

He said the garage was fully engulfed by the time emergency crews arrived on scene and was quickly spreading to the rest of the house.

“We had 2 youths that were home at the time, they were able to escape,” he said. “One of them was transported by EMS, he had a minor burn on his leg. I don’t know the condition any further than that.”

Numerous emergency vehicles responded to the scene, including police who helped block traffic around the area.

“We had three trucks and 16 firefighters respond. They were able to go into a fast, defensive mode to knock the fire down,” Stauth said.

He added a fire investigator had been called to the scene and was conducting preliminary interviews.

“We do feel that the fire started in the garage area but that’s all we really know right now,” he said.

Stauth said the damage to the home is ‘significant’, adding an early estimate on the amount of damage is around $250,000.

More to come.
