Hat High finishes in first place at Track and Field Provincials

RED DEER, AB — It was utter domination on the track by the Medicine Hat High School Mohawks over the weekend.

The Mohawks finished in first place in the 4A category at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Track and Field provincials in Red Deer, which wrapped up on Saturday. The team finished with 624.5 points, ahead of Crescent Heights High School from Calgary, which finished with 412 points. Lindsay Thurber High School, which hosted provincials, finished in third place with 383.5 points.

Hat High is the first team outside of Calgary and Edmonton to repeat as 4A Champions, and were also the first team to accumulate more than 600 points at the provincial championship.

In individual events, several athletes were able to crack the podium. Josh Suelzle took home two gold medals, one in junior boys shot put, the other in discus. He also took home the bronze medal in junior boys javelin.

Other athletes who finished with a gold medal at provincials include Kyle Spackman (junior boys pole vault), Aimee Maurice (junior girls pole vault), Taya Karsten (junior girls high jump) and Gloria Lokbai (senior girls high jump). Landon Schwartz (Intermediate 1500m run), Rhiannon Ware (senior girls 80m hurdles), Orin May (junior boys 100m hurdles) and Cambria Rattai (shot put) all came home with silver medals.

Ethan Hicks won a bronze medal in the 100m dash.

Among relay events, the team consisting of May, Josh Kiss, Zachary Campbell and Lukas Herter took gold in the 4x100m junior boys composite team event. In the open boys relay, Herter, Jaxon May, Landon Swartz and Parker Davidson took home a bronze medal in the 4x400m open boys relay. The team of Davidson, Rattai, Savannah Zee and Ashton Dennis won the bronze medal in the 4x100m unified relay.

Several other area schools had athletes make the podium during the event, including Eagle Butte High School, Monsignor McCoy High School and Crescent Heights High School

Madison Kane-Rissling from Monsignor McCoy finished first overall among senior girls during the weekend with 47 points. She also took home a bronze medal in the triple jump.

Madison Hnatiuk from Duchess School also came home with a third place finish in the junior girls javelin.
