Rain welcomed by farmers in Cypress County

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The rain may be impacting events in Medicine Hat, but it’s being welcomed by farmers in Cypress County.

In some areas of the county, up to one inch, or 25 millimetres of rain, has been recorded.

“It’s been a really good start for us,” said Councillor Dustin Vossler with Cypress County. “I know we were really starting to worry about the grass out in this country. It was getting to a point that, if we didn’t get anything soon, it was going to be too late for it, but it’s starting to look like it’s going to save that native prairie a bit, and give it some good cattle grazing and reduce the fire risk.”

Vossler, who represents Ward 6 (Black and White/Seven Persons), says the rain comes at the perfect time during the growing season.

“It was looking pretty rough,” he said. “It was putting a bit of strain on the irrigation guys. They were working pretty hard to try and pay for the rain when they couldn’t pray for the rain.”

Vossler adds he’s hoping the rain will stick around to help farmers through the summer.

“This rain is great for germination of the crops and making sure everything’s going to come out of the ground,” he said. “It’s a good start, I hope it continues and we see a bit more in the next couple of months just to keep these crops pushing through.”
