MEDICINE HAT, AB — It may be a little wet outside, but the city’s annual Sunshine Festival is still going ahead.

The Spectrum Festival returns today at Kin Coulee Park beginning at 4 p.m.

Organizers are hoping the rain will begin tapering off in the afternoon.

The event, which runs until 9 p.m., includes food, games and local bands on the band shell stage.

However, due to the rain, the beer gardens have been cancelled for Friday.

If you’re heading out today, make sure you pack an umbrella and insect repellent.

The forecast from Environment Canada is calling for mainly sunny skies and a high of 21 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Residents may want to wear a hat, carry sun screen and have plenty of water on hand if they plan to take part in the event.

Tammy Sweeney, vice-chair of the Spectrum board, is looking forward to a busy weekend.

“We hope that there are 15 to 20,000 plus visitors that attend over today and tomorrow,” she said. “There’s lots for them to do, it’s free. There’s not much you can do in Medicine Hat for free, and this is one of the big ways to be able to spend a great summer weekend.”

The festival gets underway Saturday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
