MEDICINE HAT, AB — A man charged in connection with a pair of bank robberies in Medicine Hat last year has elected to go to trial.

Stephen Vogelsang, 54, has elected to be tried by judge and jury in the Court of Queen’s Bench, according to a message from his lawyer Greg White, following an appearance in provincial court on Thursday.

Vogelsang, a former news director and anchor at CTV Winnipeg, was arrested in Medicine Hat on October 21 after a pair of alleged bank robberies on October 19 and 20 at branches of the Royal Bank of Canada and the Bank of Montreal.

In both incidents, a man walked into a bank, demanded a sum of money, and fled the scene once he received it.

Following Vogelsang’s arrest, he was charged in connection with an alleged bank robbery in Saskatoon, which occured on July 31. He was also charged in connection with three alleged robberies in Regina on July 8, October 13 and October 18.

The charges in Saskatchewan remain before the courts.

Vogelsang is scheduled to appear in provincial court on June 21 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
