MEDICINE HAT, AB — A major fundraiser for the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank is helping to support low-income parents in Medicine Hat.

The second annual Basics For Babies got underway Thursday morning at Mr. Lube on Kingsway Avenue.

Residents are encouraged to drop off cash donations and diapers for the Food Bank.

In addition to the donations being accepted outside of the building, $10 from every oil change at Mr. Lube will be donated to the cause.

The fundraiser helps ensure the food bank can help families and young children, noting baby items, such as diapers and formula, are often a big expense for families who need assistance.

“I think baby items, and specifically diapers, are often overlooked and not donated,” said Chris Hellman, owner of Mr. Lube. “The Food Bank went through 50,000 diapers last year alone, so the demand is very high. This is a great way to boost up their inventory and make sure they have what they need to help their clients.”

“When families are in need, certainly the need for diapers is higher,” said Celina Symmonds, co-executive director of the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank. “They can’t afford the high cost of them.”

As of 5 p.m., more than $11,500 has been collected.

Hellman says the goal is to collect $20,000 for the Food Bank by the end of the day.

Donations will be accepted until 6 p.m.
