MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former MLA and educator will be receiving an honorary applied degree from Medicine Hat College next week.

The college announced Dr. Lorne Taylor will receive the honour during the convocation ceremonies on June 8.

“Dr. Taylor is committed to improving our communities, whether that be through volunteering with environmental organizations, getting involved in government, or contributing to our economic climate through his family’s business pursuits – we are honoured to recognize him at convocation,” said Wayne Resch, acting president and vice-president finance and administration, in a news release.

Taylor served as MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat from 1993-2004. During his time in the legislature, he was the Minister of Science and Technology, Minister of Innovation and Science and Minister of Environment. He was involved in the creation of the SuperNet to serve all communities in the province, and also supported programs such as Alberta Innovates.

Prior to his career in politics, Taylor taught at the University of New South Wales in Australia, Memorial University in Newfoundland and the University of Saskatchewan. He left academia and returned to Medicine Hat to assist with his family-owner and operated cattle, grain and construction business.

Taylor also served three terms as chair of the Medicine Hat Public School Board.
