Motz not happy about Trans-Mountain pipeline purchase

MEDICINE HAT – Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner MP Glen Motz weighed into the debate over the federal governments plans to buy out the Kinder Morgan pipeline project.

The move will see Ottawa purchase the pipeline and the core assets of Kinder Morgan Canada for $4.5 billion dollars.

That does not include the cost of twinning the pipeline from Edmonton to Burnaby and the Liberals are not saying how much they’re willing to spend to do that.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau failed to get the job done and had to resort to spending taxpayers’ money.

Motz echoed those comments saying the move is a result of the Liberals failing to support Alberta’s energy sector. He added Ottawa shouldn’t have to nationalize the project just to get it built.

“Kinder Morgan never asked for one dollar of taxpayer money,” Motz said. “All they were really asking for was certainty that they could proceed with building the pipeline.”

“With Trudeau’s announcement today, he’s forcing Canada, forcing Canadian taxpayers, to pay for his failure in the energy sector.”

Motz also said taxpayers money shouldn’t have to be put on the line for a project that has met all federal and environmental requirements.

Other opposition parties weighed in on the announcement as well. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said the plan will not solve any problems, like Indigenous concerns and ongoing court cases.

In British Columbia, Premier John Horgan said his government will keep fighting the project in the courts.
